Dr Jenna Bowen is co-founder of Cotton Mouton Diagnostics (CMD) and a lecturer at the Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. A Pharmacist by training, Jenna co-founded CMD with colleagues from Cardiff and Exeter Universities in late 2014 to deliver an innovative diagnostic technology to the healthcare sector. Initially developed and field-tested as a malaria diagnostic, the CMD team are transforming their magneto-optical platform to bring about a paradigm shift in the diagnosis of sepsis; a condition that kills one person every few seconds and for which current diagnostic strategies are limited. CMD’s technology is affordable, reliable and critically maintains sensitivity under challenging conditions to deliver results in less than 15 minutes. Within its first year, CMD has won two prestigious Innovate UK grants and secured a seed round of investment totaling £1M. The company has assembled a multi-disciplinary team of 10 and is also part of the Welsh Government Accelerated Growth Programme.
